ABOUT OUR COUNCIL
THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
The Knights of Columbus was born in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882. Blessed Michael McGivney founded the Order as a response to the anti-Catholic prejudice and dangerous working conditions that threatened immigrant families of the era. His vision was simple yet profound: to establish a fraternal benefit society that would protect widows and orphans while deepening the faith of Catholic men. From that single council, the Order grew into a global force for good, guided by the enduring principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.
A HOME IN GREENLAWN
While the Order was taking root in New Haven, our own hamlet—originally known as “Old Fields”—was undergoing its own transformation. With the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the late 1860s, the area was renamed "Greenlawn" to attract new residents to its rolling pastures and famous pickle farms. As Catholic families settled here to work the land and build a community around St. Joseph’s Parish, the need for a strong fraternal bond became evident. Council #4810 was chartered to answer that call, bridging the gap between Greenlawn’s historic agricultural roots and the modern call to service, ensuring that the spirit of Father McGivney thrives here in the heart of Huntington.
ST. JOSEPH COUNCIL
St. Joseph Council #4810 was founded in [YEAR] with the goal of supporting the St. Joseph Parish community in Greenlawn/Huntington. Over the decades, our council has raised thousands of dollars for local charities, supported our clergy, and provided a fraternal home for Catholic men.
We are part of the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization, founded by Blessed Michael McGivney in 1882.
